climbing the stairs of the Donnybrook tram; then he turned about and

caminhou até ao Shelbourne Hotel, onde se deteve à espera. Daí a
pouco viu-os vir na sua direcção e, quando viraram à direita,
seguiu-os com o passo leve dos seus sapatos brancos por um dos lados
de Merrion Square. Conforme ia andando devagar, acertando o passo
pelo deles, observava a cabeça de Corley, que se virava a cada
instante para o rosto da rapariga como uma grande bola a girar num
eixo. Seguiu o par com os olhos até os ver subir os degraus do
eléctrico para Donnybrook; nessa altura virou para trás e regressou
pelo mesmo caminho.»
