«In later years Rockwell tended to go farther afield for his subjects. He traveled more and was less intimately connected to the specific people in his pictures. He brought his photographer to the University Club in New York City for this cover and painted his models from a distant view. Peter Rockwell remembers how much fun his father had painting the sailor, and Rockwell himself remarked, “The peculiar way a sailor stands when talking to a girl – slouched above her, left leg straight, hip out, right leg bent at knee, right arm propped on wall behind her head – has always fascinated me”.
