«Mead Schaeffer’s * only appearance as a central figure in a Rockwell’s illustration was as a tattoist. Despite his objection that Rockwell exaggerated the size of his rump, Schaeffer was delighted to have taken part in a cover that became so popular. To acquire the authentic equipment used in the picture, Rockwell located a tattooist on the Bowery in New York, and consulted with this professional and with former sailors to insure accuracy.
